WOW! A MARRIAGE BETWEEN MY TWO FAVORITE ONLINE GAMING VENTURES!

Second Life is Expanding to Steam!

Valve is the company behind Steam...and is where I play my favorite first person shooters such as Rage, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, and Counter Strike Source; just to name a few. Steam is an online gaming store and portal. Great VIOP codex for voice chatting and all around awesome engine. Stefan Box and I are always gaming and we chat thru Steam, as well as set up our games there. This company does things right. Think of them as a combination like the Playstation Store and Playstation Network by SONY.

LL also stated in another news item that they will beef up the graphics and mainstream and fix performance issues as well. This must be done if you want to make SL look and feel great to the world of gamers. The cookie cutter graphics will not make someone who enjoys great first person shooters or today's MMORPGs attractive to Second Life.

Also in the world of Modding (fans making own maps, skins, items and code for various video games) will probably be the biggest group that SL will attract. This can only be good for SL, being that supposedly community creations is big on their list, though you would not know it with their crappy new viewers that turn people off more than Sarah Palin in a bikini contest.

LL released this statement regarding this future move:

"As some sharp-eyed developers have speculated, we’re going to make Second Life available on Steam in the next month or so.

Many of us have friends who are avid Steam gamers, but if you’re not familiar, Steam is a very popular online game platform that offers a wide range of titles (and will soon also offer other software as well).

What does this news mean for Second Life? You’ll still be able to access Second Life just as you can today; there won’t be any change to that. But, the more than 40 million people who use Steam will also be able to get Second Life as easily as they can get games like Portal.

We’ll make an announcement on the blog when Second Life is actually available on Steam, but in the meantime, if you have friends who are Steam gamers, let ‘em know it’s coming!"

Very good news indeed!

Valve had this press release to say, which I think is part of this news:

Launch Set of "Software" Titles Coming Sept 5

Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC games.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

I wonder what else is coming Valve/Steam's way in the near future :)
